QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE HIRING A PAINTING CONTRACTOR

QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE HIRING A PAINTING CONTRACTOR

After going through an article on Cabinet Painting Saint Louis, i came up with some questions you may need to ask any painting contractor before hiring them for the job:

What is your main area of expertise?

Various painting contractors have different areas of expertise. As some might specialize in outdoor painting, others specialize in indoor residential projects.

You will want to go for a contractor who specializes in your project needs, although compromises can be made.

What products do you use?

Asking this question will tell you a few things. The first thing is you will see if the contractor knows what they are talking about.

If the contractor offer a range of different products and they can tell you the advantages and disadvantages of each product, that is a good sign.

Secondly, you will get a ballpark for how much you will spend in materials.

What is included in the cost?

Never take an estimate at face-value, or assume you know exactly what is included.

It is vital to note that one contractor’s price could be higher just because they included every possible expenditure you will face.

For instance, some estimates might include only the cost of materials, while other estimates will exclude the extra expenses, such as moving furniture or making preparations to the area that needs painted.

Can I contact some references?

When hiring a painting contractor, always ask for references, and the best advice is to actually get about three.

If you are speaking with a new contractor or one who has not been in business for long, you may take your chances.

However, if the contractor hides or tries to avoid giving you references, know that it is a bad sign.

How long will it take to do the job?

This is a very important question, especially if you need the painting contractor urgently.

Some contractors may have busy schedules, thereby extending months in the future, while others can start immediately.

Also, depending on how big a team they command, different contractors will quote different times to complete the project.

Do you have a written contract?

It is always a good idea to get things in writing in advance, even if everything appears trustworthy.

This written contract will ensure that both parties remain responsible for what they have already outlined, and it will give you the foundation you need to take action per adventure your painting contractor does nor fulfill his end of the bargain.

If the contractor you are hiring refuses to assemble a contract or couldn’t produce one for any reason, it is better to go with a different contractor.

BEST PAINT FOR CLOSETS

Painting your closet may not take as much time as painting your room, but it can still be tricky if you are not prepared and inexperienced. I will be sharing some tips i learned after supervising a Cabinet Painting St. Louis. You may not give much thought to the inside of your closets when painting your room, but paint experts say that choosing the right color and sheen will not only improve the appearance of your closet, but it will improve your appearance as well. And, just like other space in your house, you want to choose the right paint shade and finish to design a functional and attractive closet.

Go for light and neutral color

Selecting a color shade for your closet can be hard to deal with. Your best bet with a closet is to paint it the with the same color as the room or a slightly lighter shade to creates a simple, elegant look for space, but you will have to repaint the closet every time that you change the paint the room. If your closet is painted to match a dark wall shade, it can also be hard to see the items stored inside since dark shades don’t reflect light very well. Your best bet is to choose a light, neutral shade such as white, beige, gray or tan. It’ll work with virtually any color scheme and help reflect light so you can see better inside the closet when you’re hunting for a particular item.

Go for a satin paint

While the paint color you select for your closet is important, you also want to choose the right finish. Selecting a satin paint is a better option for you while painting your closet because it doesn’t show scuffs, streaks, and other marks as easily as semi-gloss, so it is ideal for a closet where you regularly pull items out and put them back. It’s also easier to clean so that you can wipe away any dirt or smudges on the closet walls.

Save time on ceiling

Unless you have a large, walk-in closet, its ceiling is probably not visible from the rest of the room. While you can paint it white as you would in a big room, you may find this a waste of time if you are using a different color for the closet walls. This is because you will have to carefully cut in the wall color along the edge of the ceiling. To save time, just carry over the paint shade from for the closet walls to the ceiling and do not worry about any transition along the edges.

Painting Vinyl Siding – Guide

St. Louis Painter

more vinyl painting tips that you should read.

Vinyl siding was purchased under the advantage that it is maintenance free. One of the disadvantages is, if Vinyl siding does not first get damaged, sometimes it just ugly out. And one thing that is common about vinyl siding is they come in colors not found in nature. E.g. the lavender pinkish blue cottage in the woods seems out of place. If you want to paint your vinyl siding successfully, you must put the following into consideration:

• The Cleaning technique that will be used on the vinyl siding to prepare the surface for paint
• Heat expansion of the vinyl
• Paint color about the original vinyl siding color
• Putting into consideration the type of paint to be used on the siding.

How to Paint Vinyl Siding

Preparation

Follow this simple steps shared by a St. Louis Painter to me few times when i hired him to do a painting job for me.

A thorough cleaning is a critical first step toward achieving a quality paint job not only on vinyl but any material. Use water and soap to scrub the old siding and rinse it thoroughly. Do not apply much force while washing vinyl siding because water can get behind the vinyl siding. Allow enough time for the vinyl siding to dry completely. Oxygen bleach cleaner is best used if the siding has mildewed or mold surface. And remember not to print in the direction of sunlight.
Heat Expansion of the Vinyl understands that vinyl siding was made to be installed in such a way that it slides back and forth just slightly at its overlapping seams as the siding contracts and expands. When that happens in cold weather and the siding contracts, there may be a slight color gap at the seams.

Paint Color Limitations

The vinyl siding plastic composition at the company was made for a specific amount of heat to be absorbed. As a result, it is a bad idea to pick a color shade darker than the original or you may have warping due to the fact that dark color absorb more heat than the original vinyl siding was made to handle.

Type of Paint to Purchase When Painting Vinyl Siding

Purchase a paint with a blend of urethane and acrylic resins. Water based urethane mixed with quality acrylic resins gives excellent adhesion, so buy only a quality exterior latex urethane paint such as Sherwin Williams Duration.

Dry Weather

Dampness means drips and slow drying, so avoid painting your wall on a rainy day. If you must paint when it’s humid, take your time and benefit from slow-drying paint to correct your errors before moving on to the next coat. But don’t overwork, or it will show when you are finished.

Tips for painting fireplace inside and out

http://paintingstcharles.com/

Another perspective, DIY guide on painting fireplace

Many people forget to consider the inside of their fireplace, which can certainly detract from whatever decorative changes that are being made to the outside.

A newly painted fireplace can become the highlight of your living room if painted inside and outside. To achieve this, it is important to use the right types of paints. Here, we will be giving you useful and effective tips for painting your fireplace so as to help get you started.

Choose the Best Paint For Painting the Fireplace Interior

Your fireplace is clearly exposed to direct flame the intense heat of a fire if you actually used it to light fires and not just as a decorative alcove. Because of this, you have to use a high heat resistant paint. Talk to a paint professional or check the paint label to ensure that you choose a paint that is intended for fireplace boxes.

The paint you select:

*Must be able to handle heat of up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. These kind of paints won’t blister or peel at repeated exposure to these highest levels of heat.

*Can be can or spray paint. Spray paint is better because it is easy to use, less messy, it covers and dries quickly and can also be recoated after it becomes dry. This helps the paint become thicker and more resistant to heat.

There are several great brands that can do the work efficiently including Rutland, RustOleum and Stovebright.

Choosing the Best Paint For The Fireplace Facade

If the fireplace is made of bricks, stucco or masonry, choose a high quality latex or elastomeric paint as they have many pros.

Traditional latex paint is available in satin, flat, gloss or semi-gloss finish. If these are your options, choose the finish that best matches that of the surrounding walls. Due to the porosity of both the brick and mortar, you have to do more than two coats to get the coverage you are looking for.

Most professionals, like http://paintingstcharles.com/,  recommend the use of elastomeric paint for a brick fireplace. This paint type has classically been used for exteriors because it fills in cracks and holes, it is waterproof, and it is extremely durable. Because of its acrylic and rubberized nature, elastomeric paint enters and seal cracks in your brick, and it usually does not require more than one or two coats.

How to use a paint roller on a ceiling

video source: BEHR

List of stuffs you need for the project

Drop clothes – this will protect your floors and other surfaces.

Painters ladder
Paint pole or extension pole for your paint roller extension
Caulk gun for cornice gaps
Good paint brush
Paint roller tray
Sand paper, spaka and applicator.
Foam paint brush

Preparation

First, you have to take all unnecessary wall and room furniture out or cover them with a drop clothes.

After filling and sanding any visible cracks, caulk any cornice gaps with the caulk gun.

Painting

Cutting in paint when painting ceilings is said to be easier because you will be painting walls next. Therefore, practise cutting in paint around the ceiling by doing all the cornices as close to the plaster line as possible on the wall side. On the ceiling side, make sure you go at least the width of your Wooster paint brushes toward the centre of the ceiling from the cornice. It allows for more streak free paint rolling as you won’t be bumping the roller on cornice. Next is to hand paint around any air vents, light fittings and any other features on the ceiling that won’t be flat and smooth to roll.

Place your roller tray in a central and safe position on the drop cloth then put your painters ladder away and apply the paint roller.

Fill the roller tray by no more than 1/3 of its deep point. Join the roller to the paint roller extension pole and gently roll into the tray. To help ensure a cleaner roll off, avoid as best you can getting the hooked end of the roller covered.

Roll off excess paint, and starting usually furthest from any window, roll from the ”cut in” edge of the ceiling cornice. Work the roller from one side of the ceiling over to the other cornice edge, just overlapping the cut in area of the other end point. Provide an even, not heavy, coating. With each application, cross over the last roll off point by an inch or two. Do not try to squeeze extra milage from your roller- keep going back to the tray, instead, coat up your roler, then re-apply more to the ceiling and smooth off.

What makes a quality window

When you buy a window, you are paying for the quality of the materials, the quality of the installation and the reliability of the customer service. When talking of quality, it means a window that is going to last, look great for years, and then give you a good return on your investment by being energy efficient.

Oftentimes, price is not the clear indicator of quality and value. Therefore, here is how to distinguish quality windows.

Custom Manufacturing

It is not just what windows are made of, it is how they are made that matters. In order for a window to open and close easily and also have an airtight seal, it has to fit your home perfectly. The problem is, every house is different and window openings are of different sizes too. Also, houses settle over time causing even more deviations in the measurements. A better window id custom measured, then custom manufactured to fit your home; it is not taken off an assembly line. Although, custom-made windows may cost a little more, choosing ‘one-size-fits-all windows’ will eventually cost you much more in the end, because if the windows are not airtight, you are losing energy you can’t afford to lose.

The Right Glass

Glass, on its own is not a good insulator, therefore window glass needs a little help if it is going to save you money on energy bills. Make sure you choose a window glass that has Low-E coating. Low-E coating is a micro-thin coating of metals like oxide or silver, layered on the glass. You can even increase your energy efficiency with double-glazed Low-E glass. This means your window now has two pieces of glass with a thin layer of air sandwiched in between. If argon gas is added to this air sandwich, it will improve the efficiency even more because argon is denser than air alone. Regardless of anyhow you go about it, Low-E coating is very important to thermal efficiency.

The Warranty

The last but not the least is to make sure you are familiar with the company’s warranty. Find out if they offer a good warranty. Find out if what is covered and What isn’t. A reputable company with confidence in its products and installation process will surely offer a great warranty.

3 Ways to Tell If You Need Foundation Repair

One of the most important things that you can do to protect your property is to have your concrete crack repaired. Your home is one of your biggest investments. If you do not repair your concrete crack, you might end up as losing your entire investment when your house collapses.  There are several parameters that you can use to tell whether repairing a foundation is needed. Here are a few of them.

Size of cracks

Cracks in the foundation could be a sign of a bigger problem and may therefore require urgent attention. If the cracks are bigger than a quarter of an inch either vertically, horizontally or even the stair-step cracks that occur in bricks or blocks, it is a sign that you need foundation repair.  The good thing is that some of these foundation issues can be handled by filling them with epoxy putty. You can also choose to hire a foundation repair exert to fill them with epoxy. This is an important step for preventing water from seeping into the foundation.

When there are severe cracks on your foundation, you will urgently need to address the matter before it gets out of hand. If you have the necessary experience, it is possible to DIY by simply placing wood and steel braces against the wall at certain intervals. These should attach to the overhead joints and the floor to prevent any further issues.  These will extend to the basement for around ½ foot. Another option of doing this kind of foundation repair is spreading the vertical strip of epoxy and pressing a carbon fiber mesh on epoxy. This will help to hold the wall in place to prevent further cracking.

Basic repairs

Most foundation cracks occur as a result of water accumulating in the soil around the area of the foundation resulting in the expansion of soil and putting pressure on walls resulting in cracks. Therefore, it is important to ensure that downspouts and gutters work well and that soil around the foundation has been graded well. In the most idea case, there should be a slope of at least 6 inches for each 10 feet horizontal. It is advisable to hire a foundation repair expert who will check to confirm that the perimeter drain system hasn’t been blocked. In case this is the problem, it will result in water pooling around the surrounding soil and exerting pressure on foundation wall. It is important to choose the right contractor who will help to remedy the situation.

Buckling

If you find that the level of deterioration of the wall is beyond some simple cracking and are instead buckling by more than 3 inches, it may be necessary to excavate part of foundation that is affected and rebuild it. If you have areas of soil that have been washed away to put the foundation at risk, you can use concrete to reinforce. At times, it may be necessary to repour this part of foundation before attaching to the current foundation using rebar and epoxy.

How to Repair Epoxy Floor Coating

Saint Louis concrete

Credit: recommended tool from a Saint Louis concrete expert

Many people choose epoxy floor for their garages or workspaces because of its durability. It protects the concrete underneath it, while it also resists damage due to heavy objects and motor vehicles. Most epoxy flooring is also resistant to water and stains, making it ideal for the cluttered work area. Although the epoxy flooring is solid, it is also vulnerable to damage. Chemicals such as battery acid can corrode the coating, and it can also fade or begin to crack with age. Fortunately, you can repair the damaged epoxy flooring and make it look like new.

Materials needed to repair epoxy flooring

Depending on the type of problem with the epoxy coating, there are a number of different materials needed to remedy it. To repair large cracks in epoxy, many people use an electric and rough sander, strong sandpaper, such as diamond sandpaper. You can also use a heat gun or a blow dryer, with a razor blade and paint scraper to remove the damaged epoxy. A very important thing to have when repairing epoxy flooring is the new epoxy floor paint.

Repairing faded or discolored epoxy floor coating

The best way to repair discolored or faded epoxy coating is to add another layer of epoxy paint on the existing layer. Choose a color that matches the existing epoxy or a darker color. Use a paint roller to roll the epoxy paint evenly on the floor. For a thicker coating, allow the first coat to dry completely and then apply the paint again.

While painting with epoxy, be sure to ventilate the room. Open all doors and windows before opening the paint and leave open until the epoxy is completely dry. In order to preserve the color and avoid fading in the future, it is a good idea to apply a clear sealant on dry epoxy.

Repairing epoxy floor coating with an electric sander

One way to repair cracked epoxy flooring is by removing the cracked epoxy with an electric sander. Because the epoxy is very strong, a very rough, strong sandpaper is needed. Diamond Sandpaper is ideal. Clean and dry the damaged epoxy, then begin sanding at a low setting. If the epoxy does not come out, place the sander at a higher value. Be sure to wear a dust mask when sanding epoxy to prevent inhalation of epoxy dust. Once you remove the damaged epoxy, cover the area in a new layer of epoxy and let it dry. Then apply a clear sealer across the floor.
